Spix’s Guan (Penelope jacquacu)

Our visit to Villa Carmen, a ranch/hostel near Pilcopata, was holding a few surprises for us. One of them was the guan whose behaviour resembled more that of a house cat than a bird’s.

Spix’s Guan

A resident in an Explorama camp, near Iqiutos, Peru. It was free to come and go… indeed it hadn’t been seen for a week… but when our group were out on a trail near the camp, it followed along with us, all the way back to the camp. Explorama, by the way, give you an OUTSTANDING taste of the Amazon. My ref: Eos 2089
Feeding time

Taken in JBRJ - Jan 2007. Nome: Penelope jacquacu (jacu) Name: Spix’s Guan (Penelope jaquacu) is one of about a half a dozen similar species. It is named after an early Amazon explorer. These are noisy birds with a raucuous call often heard during breeding season. Although they are built like ground birds, they spend most of the time in trees.
