The Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, is the national symbol of the United States. It barely beat out the Wild Turkey, but seems a bit more ‘noble’.
Because of its protected status, it has become a fairly common sight throughout most of Canada, northern Mexico and all of the United States except Hawaii.
It prefers to hang out next to the ocean, rivers or lakes as its main food is fish. However, it will eat any meat that is handy.

"so i finally got to the birds of prey center today. the public area is somewhat small but still enjoyable. the residents of the actual rehabilitation center are kept away from the public to avoid being imprinted, but there are still plenty of impressive-looking raptors on display in various large-caged aviaries… birds which cannot be returned to the wild for various reasons. there is also a small walkway where the more people-friendly raptors spend the days on perches. you can’t actually walk down the path, but you can take pictures from either end. this is paige, a female bald eagle with scarred lungs which prevent her from flying long distances. i believe she goes on more educational and promotional outings than any other bird at the center."
