The Spotted Thick-knee is a wading bird from the southern half of Africa. It is fairly common.

These are nocturnal waders. hence the large eyes. they have long legs and are very vocal at night. We have a pair just a few houses away. The belong to Burhinidae. In some parts of the world, they are called curlew or stone curlew."
