The Superb Lyrebird, Menura novaehollandiae is a resident of eastern Australia and has been introduced to Tasmania.

These birds are known to be one of the best mimics in the bird world. I have heard them copy everything from a car horn to a camera with a motor drive.

The male makes a spectacular mating dance. It’s tail feathers are shaped in such a way that they are reminiscent of the musical instrument by the same name.

Classification:

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Menuridae
Genus: Menura
Species: M. novaehollandiae

"A female Lyrebird feeding on the forest floor. Scratching away in the company of the scrubwren in the next photo. I saw a male + female pair crossing the path in front of me at another time which I’ve not seen before. "
