The Broad-billed Sapayoa is the only member of the family Sapayaoidae. It is found in the lowlands of Panama and adjacent South America.

The taxonomic position of the Sapayoa is uncertain. There is somewhat conflicting anatomical and DNA data that link it to different groups. Some suggest that it is the only representative of a group that is otherwise limited to Madagascar.
