The Northern Hawk Owl, Surnia ulula, is named because of the wing and tail shape as well as its ability to fly and hunt like a hawk during the day.

For photographers, this is a great subject because it really is not bothered by having people approach it.

It lives throughout the northern forests of North America and Eurasia.

Classification:

Order: Strigiformes
Family: Strigidae
Genus: Surnia
Species: S. ulula
